Very few graves in Horton Cemetery were marked with a headstone, making those that existed precious. Most were discarded in a skip and destroyed. Marjorie’s was saved.

5½ weeks after he had his head cut open by being knocked down by some roughs in the street, William Aitken suffered a life of Epilepsy in hospitals and asylums. His wife left the children to fend for themselves and it would appear he never saw any of them again.

After 17 years in Manor Asylum, Epsom, Mary Ann Hall was transferred to Ewell Epileptic Colony when the asylum was requisitioned as a war hospital in 1916.

James Beston spent most of his life in workhouses, an orphanage and then Horton Asylum.

He died of TB in 1903, aged just 23 years.

Poverty - from which there was no escape - shaped his life.
