Joseph Maslen Horsey’s parents were Henry and Sarah Ann née Maslen. They were married on 14 September 1890 in St. John’s Church Hoxton. Henry was 26 years old and lived at 87 Phillip Street. Sarah was 22 years old and lived at 10 Hows Street.
Joseph Maslen Horsey was born on 20 July 1897. He was baptised at St. John the Baptist church Hoxton on 22 August 1897. At the time of his birth, his parents were living at 15 Dragon Road, Camberwell.
1901
In the 1901 Census, living at 19 Dragon Road were,
Henry Horsey, the head of the family, aged 36 and a roof repairer born in Whitechapel;
Sarah, his wife, aged 33 and born in Tottenham, and their children,
Annie aged 9,
Henry aged 7,
Lilly aged 5 all of whom were born in Shoreditch,
Joseph M. aged 3
Ethel G. aged 1, both of who were born Camberwell.
There were 13 people living in the house.
In the Surrey Comet newspaper dated 9 December 1908 there was an article regarding the theft of coal, by Harry Horsey aged 15 and his brother Joseph aged 11.
They were charged with stealing coal from Merton Abbey Railway station, having been arrested in the street taking the coal home. Merton Abbey station was two miles from their home in Fairlight Road, Tooting. They were remanded in custody.
1911
In the 1911 Census, the family was living at 43 Letchworth Street, Tooting. Living there were,
Sarah Horsey, head of the family aged 44 and married, and her children,
Harry aged 18, a paper agent born in London,
Lilley, aged 16, a confectioner’s assistant born in Camberwell,
Joseph, aged 14, and a scholar, born in Tooting.
Sarah had been married for 3 years (!). She had had 5 children, one of whom had died.
There is a Harry Horsey living in 111, Chadworth Buildings, Lever St, Holborn. He is aged 46 years, is married and is a linesman. This could be her husband, Henry.
Joseph died aged 20 in Long Grove Asylum in the 1st quarter of 1918. He was buried in Horton Cemetery on 22 March 1918 in grave 712a.
On 5 January 1919, Lilian Horsey married Arthur Peddie at the parish church of Tooting. The father of the bride “”Henry Harry Horsey” signed as a witness.
