James Bates lies in grave 222b.
James was admitted to Horton Asylum in 1911.
No known relatives or friends and he said he had been suicidal.
On that same morning, he had tried to jump from the
...window, but other inmates had stopped him.

On 6th  July 1983, Kirkwoods sent a list of the tombstones and memorials that had been removed from the cemetery to the Registrar General of Miscellaneous Records in St Catherine House.

Cemetery Clearance
In 1983, Epsom solicitors, Kirkwoods issued notice of “the intention to remove remaining tombstones, monuments and other memorials” from Horton “for the purpose of reducing
...the maintenance costs”. This was carried out on 26th May 1983.
