Joseph William Poulton and Maria Page were married on 11 July 1864 at St. Jude’s Church Bethnal Green. Joseph was 29, a Printer and Maria was 21.
1871 Census
The family were at 3 Little Sutton Street Clerkenwell in the 1871 Census. Those present were Joseph William Poulton, head, aged 35, Compositor, born Colchester, Maria, wife, aged 27, born St. Luke’s, and their children:

A death in the family – and George is admitted to the workhouse
George’s father Joseph William Poulton died aged 66 in the June quarter of 1902, reference Islington 1b 181.
On 22 April 1904 George was admitted to the St. John’s Road Workhouse, Islington. He was described as a canvasser aged 25, living at 205 Liverpool Street.
Transfer to the Manor Asylum and then to Long Grove
He was discharged from the Workhouse on the 29 April to the Manor Asylum Epsom. He was subsequently transferred to Long Grove Asylum.
On 25 December 1906 Florence Maud Poulton married Arthur Edward Evans at Holy Trinity Church Islington. Maria Poulton signed as a witness.
1911 Census
In the 1911 Census Florence was living at 21 Ormond Road Upper Holloway. Present were Arthur E. Evans, head, 26, Tailor, born Paddington, Florence, wife, 25, born Islington, Edward, son, 2, born Islington, Ivy, daughter, 1, born Islington, Maria Poulton, mother in law, 67, widow, born Clerkenwell and Catherine Poulton, sister in law, 35, Printer, born Clerkenwell.
George dies in Long Grove
George died in Long Grove Asylum and was buried in Horton Cemetery on 15 May 1919, reference June quarter Epsom 2a 49.
George’s mother Maria died aged 77 in the March quarter of 1921, reference Islington 1b 309.
