b.1857 – d.1923

We know very little about Johanna.  We know that she was a teacher or governess; that she was born in Germany in the 1850s; and that she was related to the famous opera singer Mathilde Bauermeister, whose address is on Johanna’s death certificate, and whose nephew the Reverend L.E.A. Ehrmann (described as a cousin) was the informant.

The earliest record we have found for Johanna (so far) is from September 1906 when she was admitted to Bexhill asylum from Peckham House. A month later she was transferred to Manor Hospital (Private Class), where she remained until 1916 when Manor was converted to war use, and she was transferred temporarily to Claybury. She returned to Manor in 1919 and died there in 1923.

Her case notes record that she was suffering from Delusional Insanity.

July 7th 1915: Has many delusions of grandeur:- Is the Queen of England-Prussia and Hanover, is daughter of the Prince of Wales, and she believed that she owned ‘this place’ and the Bank of England, etc. etc.

Aug 8th 1916: Believes the German Emperor proposed to her & that she is Queen of Germany.

These two relatives mentioned earlier, are the only two to appear in the Manor address book for Johanna.
