This is William’s wife, Edith Amelia Ellis. Her great grandson says, “Sitting in her somewhat uncomfortable chair on the top floor of 164 Central Street, dressed in the same ‘pinny’ every time we visited, with a lovely, warm smile and the longest fingers imaginable.”

After 17 years in Manor Asylum, Epsom, Mary Ann Hall was transferred to Ewell Epileptic Colony when the asylum was requisitioned as a war hospital in 1916.

James Beston spent most of his life in workhouses, an orphanage and then Horton Asylum.

He died of TB in 1903, aged just 23 years.

Poverty - from which there was no escape - shaped his life.
