Thomas’ year of birth has been calculated from his death certificate, but as he has not been identified, with any sense of accuracy in any census, nor has a record of his birth and parentage been found.
On 10th January 1899 Thomas, aged 32, was admitted to the St Saviours Workhouse in Southwark where it was recorded that he worked as a Hawker.
He was readmitted there again on 15th February 1901 and then three days later discharged to the Newington Workhouse in Walworth, London.
Although he has not been found in the 1901 Census, he may have stayed there for just over a year before being transferred to Horton Asylum in Epsom, Surrey, on 24th March 1902.
Following his death on 26th September 1902, a postmortem showed that Thomas, aged 35, had died from phthisis, also known as the wasting-condition consumption.
His death certificate recorded that he was “A Hawker of Newington Workhouse”.
Thomas’ body was buried on 2nd October in grave 58 in the Horton Estate Cemetery.
