Samuel was born in 1862 in the St Martin in the Fields registration district to Arthur Eaton 1822-1883 and Mary Ann nee Belcher 1828 – 1894. He was baptised on March 16th 1862 at St Margaret’s Church Westminster, with his father recorded as a cellar man. They were living at 7 Whitcombe St. Haymarket.
Arthur had been born in Benson, Oxfordshire and Mary Ann in Medmenham, Buckinghamshire. They married in St Peter’s Church, Pimlico on 19th August 1852. Arthur gave his profession as a cellar man. His father was also Arthur, a Licensed Victualler. Mary Ann does not give a job and her Father, John was a Labourer.
The Children
Arthur and Mary Ann had nine children, seven of whom lived to adulthood:
Arthur Henry (1853 – 1853); Mary Ann Jane (1854); Arthur (1857); Adelaide (1859); Samuel (1862 – 1908); Annie (1854); Eliza Martha (1868); Beatrice Ann (1871-1872); Edith (1874)
1881 Census
On the 1881 Census Samuel is recorded as a Gasfitter. Samuel’s mother was not with the family; she was with her sister Adelaide and her brother-in-law James Flint, at the North Star Public House on the Finchley New Road where James was the Licensed Victuallar.
1891 and 1901 Censuses
In the 1891 Census Samual is recorded as a fitter (Engineer) and in 1901 as a Gasfitter. His sister Edith is recorded at the same address as is his mother Mary Ann, now aged 62 years old.
Entry to Asylums and Death at Long Grove
On June 19th 1907 Samuel was admitted to Hertfordshire asylum and remained there for six months. Samuel was transferred to Long Grove on December 16th 1907. He died on April 12th 1908. He was a Gasfitter of The Police Station, East Barnet. His death was due to Tertiary Syphilis.
Samuel is buried in grave 129b.
