Ways to help Horton Cemetery

Donate

Every donation, large or small, helps us care for Horton Cemetery, uncover the stories of those buried there, and work towards securing its future.

Our day-to-day work has real costs. For example, £11 can pay for a Birth, Marriage or Death certificate from the GRO, helping us piece together the story of someone buried at Horton, while ~£150 can cover our annual subscription to a genealogy research service.

But we also have a much bigger ambition. We may have an opportunity to purchase the cemetery land, protecting it for the future and ensuring that the people buried there are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

If that opportunity arises, we will need to raise significant funds to purchase and then repair years of neglect. Every contribution helps us continue our work today — and brings us a little closer to being able to secure and protect Horton Cemetery for generations to come.

Research

We welcome new Volunteer Researchers to join our team. If you are interested please contact us, we would love to hear from you.

There are a number of Polish military personnel who fought with British Forces in WW2 buried in the cemetery. If you are a Polish speaking genealogical researcher or can help with document translation we would also love to hear from you.

Some of the other things we are looking for, that would help us tell as complete a story of the burials and cemetery as possible are:

  • Provide any Photos/plans of the cemetery from any era (please provide permission to use at same time).
  • Do you visit any archives around the country? Help us by adding required records to your list and photographing them.
  • Do you have any documents about the cemetery, its residents, or staff?
  • Memories of the cemetery, especially from people that worked there as nurses, grave diggers or maintenance.
  • Memories or Photos of people that are buried there.
  • Copies of Birth, Marriage, Death certificates for the burials.

We have all the grave numbers, but nobody has yet been able to come up with a valid layout of the cemetery, showing which grave numbers are where and how graves were laid out either side of the central paths.
