The Headstones & Memorials

On the 6th July 1983, KIRKWOODS SOLICITORS of Epsom, acting for ‘the freeholder’ wrote to the Registrar General, informing them that pursuant to clause 10 of the Schedule to The Disused Burial Grounds (Amendment) Act 1981 they enclosed a schedule of all [apparently] the tombstones and memorials removed from the Cemetery.

We know from the image of a headstone for Marjorie Thornhill seen here, which was sent in by a follower some 10yrs ago; and also the story of Marjorie Young, whose headstone was rescued from a skip outside the site, that all memorials were clearly not removed, and no evidence was provided as to the vandalised state.

As far as we’re aware, there are no further markers or stones on site. Do not trespass.

Schedule of all the tombstones and memorials set in a vandalised paved area inside the previous entrance from Hook Lane which, having been broken and defaced, were removed from the Cemetery on the 26 May, 1983, in accordance with Clause 9 of the Schedule to the Disused Burial Grounds (Amendment) Act 1981. There being no evidence of any other such memorials existing in, on or around the cemetery.
