Their Story

Edward AUGHUET

Born in Corfu, Greece

According to census records Edward AUGHUET was born in Corfu, Greece in 1862 so it has not yet been possible to trace his birth or when he came to London. He seems to have led a quiet life living and working in London. He married Theresa Roche in the first quarter of 1890 in Marylebone and their daughter Theresa was born on November 29th 1890.

Married Life

In the 1901 Census Edward was living with his wife Theresa and their daughter, aged 10. The record shows that he was a naturalised British subject. His wife was born in Ireland and his daughter in Marylebone, London. Edward was a furniture warehouse packer at this time.

By the time of the 1911 Census Edward and Theresa had been married for 21 years. Edward was now a Glove Packer and Porter working for a glove manufacturer. His daughter Theresa was now a Draper’s Assistant.

Employed as a Glove Packer

The 1921 Census gives a better picture of their employers. Edward was employed as a Glove Packer for Messrs Fownes Bros & Co, 71 Gresham Street, London E.C. In 1921 Fownes Gloves (Manufacturers and Merchants) had premises at 71, 73 and 75 Gresham Street and at 1 Aldermanbury, London, E.C. The London warehouse had 110 staff and they had branch warehouses in New York, San Francisco, Montreal, Melbourne, Paris, Parma and Hamburg, with factories in Worcester, Charlbury, Gillingham, Battersea, Tipperary, Evesham, Amsterdam, New York, Saxony and Paris. According to Grace’s Guide, Fownes Gloves was established in Worcester in 1777. So Edward apparently had a good job with a very reputable employer.

The 1920s

Also in the 1921 Census, his daughter Theresa was now working as a Mantle Saleswoman at Swan & Edgar, 10 Piccadilly, London, W1. Swan & Edgar was a prestigious department store in the centre of London and was on the same site until it closed in 1982.

Edward and his wife were shown in electoral registers from 1918 to 1928 living in Saltram Crescent, Paddington.

His daughter Theresa married Edmond Thomas PENNY in January 1929. Edmond’s occupation was recorded in the 1939 England & Wales Register as a Dentist. Edmond was initiated into the United Grand Lodge of England Freemasons on 13 March 1915 at Cyclist Lodge, Kingston on Thames.

It was a surprise to discover that Edmond Thomas PENNY (born 5 Jan 1884) died on 16 March 1952 and is also buried at Horton Cemetery. The 1946 Census shows Theresa living on her own at 34 Hazlitt Road, Hammersmith. I have been unable to find any children of theirs or a death record for Theresa.

Edward AUGHUET was a patient in Long Grove and died there in March 1933, aged about 71. It is not clear why or when he was admitted.
