Horton Cemetery Campaign Reaches Parliament
8 December 2025

We are delighted to announce an important milestone in our campaign to protect Horton Cemetery.
Following our continued efforts to raise awareness of the cemetery and the more than 9,000 former patients buried there, Epsom & Ewell MP Helen Maguire has tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament calling for its protection.
But what does that actually mean?
An Early Day Motion puts an issue formally on the parliamentary record and allows MPs from across the country to add their support. The motion calls on the Government to urgently safeguard Horton Cemetery and other historic pauper burial grounds from development or exhumation, while recognising the work of Friends of Horton Cemetery and our Lost Souls project.
It does not itself change the law or guarantee Government action, but it means the campaign for Horton Cemetery is now being heard at a national level — an important step forward in our fight to protect the cemetery and ensure those buried there are remembered with dignity.
