b.1828 -d.1902

Marjory Cameron was aged 74 when she died in the Horton Asylum in Epsom, Surrey, on 21st June 1902. Her death certificate records that she was the widow of Mr. Cameron of 42 Winchester St, Pimlico, and that she died from “Ulcerative Colitis”.

A check of the census entry for 42 Winchester St in 1901 does not show a Cameron living there.

1877 – Peckham Asylum

On 6th March 1877 Marjory was admitted to Peckham Asylum. She is a pauper. She was released on 25th May 1877, not improved and transferred to Hanwell in Middlesex (a.k.a. Norwood).

Marjory was recorded in 1881 as being a patient at the same Middlesex Lunatic Asylum in Norwood (Hanwell). The census stated that she was a widow, had no occupation and had been born c.1828 in Scotland.

She was ‘released’ on January 1st 1896, but there is no evidence as to where she went.

Ten years on and this Marjory was still in the same asylum. This time though, the enumerator did not give any dignity to the patients by recording their full names, and just recorded them by their initials. Marjory was recorded as M C, a widow aged 63, and her birthland as Scotland.

Marjory does not appear to be in the Norwood Asylum when the 1901 Census was taken.

There is an entry that may be her in the Colney Hatch London County Lunatic Asylum, Friern Barnet, Middlesex, England. The entry for this patient again had just the initials M C and stated that she was single and had been a cook and housekeeper. Her place of birth has been transcribed as Scotland but looks like Ireland to me, so maybe this is not our Marjory.

It may well be that Marjory did not leave institutions throughout this time

Entry to Fisherton

I am however certain that, on 20th December 1901, our Marjory was admitted to the Fisherton House Asylum in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Finally to Horton

Having spent Christmas and New Year there, she was discharged on 17th April 1902 into the care of the Horton Asylum in Epsom, Surrey, and where she later died on 21st June 1902.

Her body was buried in grave 22 in the Horton Estate Cemetery on 25th June 1902.
