Adeline was baptised on 5th July 1843 in St Mary Abbott Church in Kensington. At the time, her parents were living at 4 Chapel Place, Hammersmith, and her father was described as an officer of the Police Court.

Censuses give us just a snapshot in time, and the 1851 census recorded that the family was living in the Police Court House, Hammersmith, Middlesex, where Adeline’s father worked as the chief usher.

1860s

On 5th March 1860 the Daily News newspaper reported that Adeline’s father had “past his examination and had been appointed as a second clerk”.

When the 1861 Census was taken a year later, the family was recorded as living in a large, terraced house at 13 Vernon Street, Fulham, Middlesex.

1870s

The 1871 Census records the family as living back in the Police Court House, Brook Green, Hammersmith.

The following year Adeline’s 53-year-old father died and was buried on 5th February 1872. Following the death of her husband, Harriet opened a drapers’ shop, and in 1881 was living and working with her two sons Alfred and Arthur in her shop at Archway Street in Barnes, Richmond.

Adeline’s Admission to the Asylum

The whereabouts of Adeline in 1881 is not known, but it would seem that she was not living with any of her family. Ten years later when the 1891 census was taken, she appears to be a patient in the Lancaster Lunatic Asylum in Lancashire. She was recorded as being aged 50 (but was actually 48), single and had previously been working as a servant.

Adeline’s mother Harriet died in 1891 and was buried in the Brompton Cemetery on 21st July.

On 15th March 1892 Adeline was admitted to Cane Hill Asylum in Coulsdon, Surrey. She was later discharged to Warwick Asylum on 1st December 1897.

When the next census was taken on 31st March 1901, 57-year-old Adeline was recorded as being a lunatic patient in the Hatton Asylum, Hatton, Warwickshire.

According to the admissions register that covers 14th June 1900-22 Jan 1904, Adeline Andrews was admitted to Graylingwell, West Sussex on 7th October 1901. She is also recorded in the female case book that covers Aug 1900-Oct 1901. There appears to be a photograph of her. This evidence will be located and copied at the earliest opportunity. Details will then be added here to her story.

Her final discharge on 19th June 1902 was to the Horton Mental Asylum in Epsom, Surrey.

Adeline was aged 59 when she died in Horton Asylum on 20th November 1902. Her remains were buried two days later in grave 72 in the Horton Estate Cemetery, Epsom, Surrey.
