Rose’s parents
Rose Hester Curwood was born 28th February 1881 to Thomas Curwood (1839 -1914) a House Painter and his wife Harriett, née Beckett, (1839 – 1909). They had married in 1863. Rose was baptised on 17th September 1882 at St Paul’s Church, Hammersmith. 1881. The register also gave her birth date as 28th February . The family address was Raynham Road. Rose was the tenth of eleven children born to the couple.
The 1890s
On the 1891 census Rose is recorded as a scholar along with her sister Florence and brother William. Sister Gertrude age 15 has no occupation, whilst big brother James Gerrish is on leave from the Army. The family are living at 55 Raynham Road.
The 19th June 1896 sees Rose being confirmed at the church of St Alban the Martyr. Her address is given as 25 Bradmore Park Road, Hammersmith. Two days later on 21st June she took her first Communion.
The 1901 and 1911 Censuses
The 1901 Census shows that Rose is a dressmaker living with her Mother Harriett who was aged 62, and her brother William aged 17, an Assistant Theatre Agent, whilst Thomas senior is boarding at 9 Havelock Road, Hammersmith with Mrs Elizabeth Hunkin, a widow, and her son George.
Searching for the family on the 1911 Census found that Thomas senior, aged 71, was a widower in the Fulham Workhouse, his previous occupation was that of a House Painter. Searching for the death of Harriett I found she died at the age of 68 on 15th February 1909 from Bronchitis. She was living at 31 Swanscombe Road, Chiswick. Her daughter Harriet – now Mrs Joseph Green – who had been present at the death also registered it. At that time Harriet and her husband were living in Hammersmith at 3 Miles Street.
At first I could not identify Rose on the 1911 census but found her in Long Grove Asylum. Recorded as single, a dressmaker, born Hammersmith, under her initials R.E.C. Further searching found that Rose was admitted to Long Grove on the 25th September 1908.
She died on 24th September 1917 at Long Grove from Pulmonary tuberculosis and is buried in plot 1140a,
It is sad, but remarkable to note that Rose was the third child in the family to die in Long Grove. First was Thomas Edward in 1908 followed by Florence in 1913 and then Rose 1917.
