Jane’s parents and siblings

Jane Gilchrist was born in the Holborn registration district to Charles Edward Gilchrist 1854  1895 and his wife Mary née Hawkins (1855 – 1896). They had married 22nd October 1876 at St  John the Evangelist in Charlotte Street (off Tottenham Court Road). Charles gave his occupation as  Clerk. In a later census he is a Bookseller. His name varies from Edward Charles or Charles Edward. They had eleven children, only five of whom reached adulthood. They were all born in the Holborn  area.

Jane’s siblings:-

  • Charles William 1877 – 1878
  • Henry James 1879 – 1895
  • Edward George 1881
  • Alfred Walter 1883
  • Beatrice Agnes 1885 – 1885
  • Bertie 1885
  • Ellen 1887 – 1888
  • Frederick 1889
  • May 1891 – 1892
  • Jane 1893 – 1918
  • Louisa Maud 1894 – 1895

Admitted to the workhouse with her siblings

The first time that I find Jane in records is when she, along with Alfred, Bertie and Frederick, are  admitted to the City Road Workhouse on 5th March 1896. I wondered what the cause of  admission was, when searching further, I discovered that their father died on 18th November 1895 aged 41 from  Pneumonia and their Mother on 21st February 1896 as a result of a uterine haemorrhage from a  premature labour.

The 1901 Census

In the 1901 census Jane and Frederick are boarding with Philip and Amelia Moore at West  Orchard in Dorset. Philip is a Farm Labourer and both Amelia and Philip are 65.

Admission to the Epileptic Colony and death

The next encounter with Jane is on 17th December 1908 when she was admitted to the  Workhouse Infirmary – a readmission from Meath Home, Hayling Island and discharged to the  Epileptic Colony on April 2nd 1909.

The 1911 census shows that she was epileptic from about the age of 16.

Sadly Jane died on 4th January 1918 as a result of Status Epilepticus of 6 hours duration. It must  have been very distressing to Jane and the staff.
