William’s parents and older siblings

William’s parents were John James Lewis and Louisa Lewis, née Jenkins. John was born in the December quarter of 1844, reference Strand 1 377. The Strand Registration District covered the parish of St Clement Danes. John and Louisa were married on 4 June 1865 at St Mary’s Church, Tower Hamlets.

On 25 July 1866, John James Lewis junior was born. He was baptised at St Giles in the Fields Church, WC2 on 29 August 1866. His parents were John James and Louisa.

In the September quarter of 1869, Rosina Lewis was born, reference St Giles 1b 521. She was baptised on 18 July 1869 at St Clement Danes Church, The Strand. Her parents, John James and Louisa, lived at 144 Drury Lane. Rosina was born on 25 June 1869.

In the 1871 Census, the family was living at 90 Drury Lane. The occupants were John James Lewis, head of the household, aged 26, and a printer compositor, Louisa, his wife, aged 24, John James junior, their son, aged 4, and Rosina, their daughter, aged 1.

Birth of William and 1880s

On 9 March 1873, William Grosvenor J Lewis was born, reference June quarter Camberwell 1d 696. He was baptised at St George’s Church in Southwark on 3 June 1873.

In the December quarter of 1877, George Robert Lewis was born, reference Camberwell 1d 865. Camberwell Registration District covered Peckham. He was baptised on 7 October 1877 at St Luke’s Church in Camberwell.

In the 1881 Census, the family was at 8 Addington Crescent, Lambeth. The family consisted of:

  • John Jas. Lewis, head of the household, married, aged 36, and a printer compositor, born in St Clement Danes
  • Louisa, his wife, aged 36, and born in Pancras,
  • John Jas. junior, their son, aged 14, and a messenger, born in St Giles in the Fields
  • Rosina, their daughter, aged 11, and a scholar, born in St Giles in the Fields
  • William G J, a scholar, born in Peckham
  • George Robert, their son, aged 3, and born in Peckham

On 1 January 1883, Alice Lucy Lewis was born, reference March quarter Lambeth 1d 381. She was baptised on 13 May 1883 at St John’s Church, Southwark.

1890s

On 28 March 1891, Rosina Lewis married Henry Reitz at St Mary’s Church, Newington.

In the 1891 Census, taken on 5 April, the family was at 13 New Street in Newington. The family consisted of:

  • John J Lewis, head of the household, married, aged 46, and a printer born in the Strand
  • Louisa, his wife, aged 44, born in Pancras, John L, their son, aged 26, and a packer, born in St Giles
  • William G J, their son, aged 18, a printer born in Peckham
  • George R, their son, aged 17, an errand boy born in Peckham
  • Alice, their daughter, aged 8, born in Lambeth

On 13 May 1894, William married Mary Annie Fuller at St Mary’s Church, Newington.

In the June quarter of 1895, Annie Louisa Lewis was born, reference St Saviour Southwark 1d 181. She was baptised on 2 June 1895 at St Paul’s Church, Newington. Her parents were William Joseph and Mary Annie of 16 Barret Road in Newington.

John James Lewis junior, William’s older brother, was married on 2 August 1896 to Beatrice Whitney at St Mary’s Church in Newington.

In the December quarter of 1896, Annie Louisa Lewis, daughter of William and Mary Annie, died age 1, reference St Saviour 1d 91.

William and Mary Annie’s son, William Albert John Lewis, was born on 10 November 1897, and was baptised on 5 December 1897 at St Mary’s Church, Newington.

In the June quarter of 1899, William’s father, John James Lewis, died reference St Saviour 1d 75.

Albert Ernest Lewis was born on 25 June 1900, and was baptised on 5 August at St Mary’s Church in Newington. His parents were William Grosvenor and Mary Ann of 46 Marsland Road in Newington.

1900s

The 1901 Census revealed that: William Lewis and family lived at 46 Marsland Road in Newington. He was head of the household, aged 28, and a printer born in Peckham. The other residents were his wife Annie, aged 26, born in Southwark, William, their son, aged 3, born in Newington, and Albert, their son, 9 months, and born in Newington.

Louisa Lewis was living at 26 Pendon Place in Newington. She was head of the household, married, aged 54, and a housewife. The other residents were her son George, aged 23, and a compositor, and Alice, her daughter, aged 18, and a tie maker. Though recorded as married, Louisa was a widow by this stage, as John James Lewis senior had died in 1899.

Lillian Sophia Lewis was born on 23 July 1907 and was baptised at St George the Martyr Church Southwark on 22 September 1907. Her parents were William and Anne Lewis.

On 2 April 1909, Wm. Grosvenor Joseph Lewis was admitted to Horton Asylum Epsom.

1910s

The 1911 Census revealed that W G J Lewis, aged 38, and married, was a patient in Horton Asylum in Epsom.

Mary Annie Lewis, William’s wife, was living at 46 Marsland Road in Newington. She was described as wife, aged 36, married, and a cardboard box maker. She had been married for 16 years, six children had been born alive and four were still living. The other residents were William Albert Lewis, her son, aged 13, and at school, born in Newington, and Lillian Sophia, her daughter, aged 3, and born in Newington.

John James Lewis junior, William’s brother, was living at 20 Penton Place in Newington. The residents were:

  • John James Lewis, head of the household, aged 44, and a leather cutter, born in Bloomsbury
  • Beatrice Annie, his wife, aged 39, and born in Buckinghamshire
  • John James, their son, aged 14, at school, and born in Newington
  • Beatrice Louisa, their daughter, aged 11, at school, and born in Southwark
  • Adelaide Gladys, aged 4, and born in Newington.

They had been married for 14 years. Five children had been born alive and two had died.

In November 1918, our William died age 45. He was buried in Horton Cemetery Grave 354a on 29th November.

William Lewis’ siblings after his death

Albert Ernest Lewis married Lilian Slocome on 29 June 1924 at St Giles Church, Camberwell. But then on 22 February 1927, Albert Ernest Lewis, a widower, aged 26, married Alice Cody, aged 24, at St John’s Church, Newington.

On 14 December 1929, Lillian Sophia Lewis married Alfred Edgar Webber at Emmanuel Church in Camberwell. Her brother Albert Ernest Lewis was a witness.

In the April quarter of 1965, Rosina Reitz died age 96, reference Southwark 5e 62.

In the March quarter of 1975, Alice Lucy Lewis died age 92, reference Bromley 11 -1178.

In the March quarter of 1975, Albert Ernest Lewis died age 74, reference Surrey Mid-Eastern- 17- 01358. He was born on 25 January 1900.

In the December quarter of 1984, William John A. Lewis died age 87, reference Southend 9 2937. He was born on 13 November 1897.

In the March quarter of 1987, Lillian Sophia Webber died age 79, reference Gravesend 16 886. She was born on 23 July 1907.
