b. 1862 – d. 1909

1860s

Known as Frederica.

Frederica was the first child of five found born to Frederick William Runyard George (b. 1816 the son of Joseph George and Ann Runyard) an accountant of Shoreditch, London and Susannah Foskett, (b. 1834) of Aston Clinton, a village 4.4 miles from Aylesbury, Bucks, the daughter of Joseph, an Agricultural labourer. The name Foskett is transcribed with several spellings.

Frederick and Susannah married on 20 November 1861 in Godalming, Surrey. Banns had been called at St Mary’s, Lambeth. In the 1861 census, Susannah’s father is living in the High Street, Godalming, working as an Agent for Pickfords the carriers. The couple made their home in the Brixton area of London.

Frederica was born in 3Q 1862, Kensington. The GRO entry reads.

  • GEORGE, SUSANNAH  FREDERICA
  • Mothers Maiden Name: FOSKETT
  • GRO Reference: 1862  S Quarter in NEWINGTON  Volume 01D  Page 241

Even though the birthdate does not match exactly, we believe this to be the adult baptism record for Frederica, it is possible a simple human error meant the year is out by 1.

The next child born is William Runyard Joseph GEORGE Q3-1866, in St. Pancras, taking the name Joseph from both Frederick’s and Susannah’s fathers. He is baptised on 22nd July 1866 in Holy Trinity, Haverstock Hill.

In Q3-1868 Frederick William Edward GEORGE is born, registered in St. Pancras.

1870s

On 11 Jan 1871 a third son, Herbert Hilary, is born in Lambeth.

The 1871 Census finds the family now living in Brixton in the borough of Lambeth at  Bythorn Terrace.

  • Head of house is Frederick W R, 55, an Accountant,
  • Susannah 36,
  • Frederica S, 8,
  • Frederick 2.

with lodgers Rebecca Anderson, widow, 58, occasional servant, James Thayer maybe Thorpe badly transcribed, widower, a Metal Agent and his daughter Clara 22, Shop assistant. 1874  3Q A second daughter Amy Annie Gertrude is born in Lambeth.

1880s

Sadly, in Q1-1880 Frederick William Edward dies aged 11. He is buried on the 18th March 1880 in Norwood Cemetery, Lambeth.

1881 Census. The family have moved to 101 Loughborough Road E, St Mary’s, Lambeth, still in the Brixton area.

  • Frederick, Head of house, age 56 [Incorrect as he is actually 65], No occupation listed perhaps retired,
  • Susannah 46,
  • Frederica 18,
  • Herbert 10,
  • Amy 6.

Also Margaret Stewart a widow 30 living on Dividends. 1884 sees the death of Frederick William Runyard aged 68.

They have two visitors – Hester Bradley 59, Susannah’s widowed sister, and Helen Harris 3. There is also a boarder Mary Phillips 76.

3rd  November 1898 Amy marries John Stanwix at Holy Trinity, Tulse Hill, Lambeth.

3rd December 1898 Herbert marries Lilian Emma Farris at St Anthony, Nunhead, Southwark.

1900s

1901 Census. Again the family have moved. Their address is now 4 Hawarden Grove, Tulse Hill, Lambeth. Head is Susannah 67, Widow, Frederica 36, John Stanwix 32 a Chemist (Drug), Amy 26 and their son George aged 1. Nellie Harris, 13, is a visitor. I assume this is the Helen Harris from the previous census.

1906, St Giles, Camberwell Workhouse. Frederica was admitted on 28 November recorded as Insane.

1st Dec 1906 admission to Horton Asylum as a pauper as recorded in the Lunacy Asylum Register. The register shows that she died on 21st October 1909. She was buried in Horton Cemetery on 26th October 1909.

None of the census records state that Frederica was suffering from any mental illness or disability. There is no record of her ever having an occupation.

Family Notes

The 1911 census shows Susannah living as a boarder with her daughter and son-in-law, Amy and John Stanwix, their three children, her sister Hester Bradley, and Helen Harris in Dulwich. Her death is registered in 2Q 1913 in Camberwell, age 79.

Herbert in the 1911 census lists that he and his wife have had two children and one has died. Their son Herbert Roy was born Q4 1899 and died Q1 1900. Sadly, later in 1911 his other child Mabel Lilian b. Q1 1901 also dies.

Herbert himself dies in 1912 and is buried on 10 May in Southwark.

Very sadly, Susannah lived to see four of her children die.

Amy lives until 1963 residing in Brighton with family.
